We have a whirlpool top loader in our Mass. cottage which we close for the winter. Each Spring , the washer will not proceed to spin unless I spray it with WD40, whack the transmission, or grab the belt and push it. This year I kicked the belt and it spun. What is hanging up and how do I fix it properly? Only does this for the first few washes.

It could be a few things. Your belt could be slick and no longer "gripping" the motor pulley, or the tranny spindle is getting worn and when you get it running it splashes oil on the bushing inside the tranny. Also, these belts can get set due to storage and become frexible when running for a while.
