Default Whirlpool washer making scraping sound
Model Number: LXR9200HQI   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Okay let me try this again. About a month and a half ago, the washer stop spinning. After doing some research on washers with similar problem, found it was the direct drive coupler. I noticed that the new part had metal in the middle while the original ones did not. After finally getting the cover back on, I tested it without any clothes. I just wanted to make sure it was spinning and sounded okay until it stopped. When it did, it made this horrible scraping sound. I have since taken off the cover and ran it again thinking I might be able to see the problem. I thought it might be a spring but they all are intact. I really could use some help with this problem.

If the spin basket comes to a jeky stop, you have sticking brake shoes. You can go to my Sticky above "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes" for info on this.
You can also shine a light in the spin basket and look for something like a bra band stuck in the tub.

Hi Rich,

I took the lid off so I could watch it spin. It doesn't have a jerky stop but it does jerky when its spinning. The sound is almost like metal scraping against metal. I did check the tub (all underwear is wash by hand)but there nothing in there.

You can get tear apart info in the "sticky" I mentioned. I would pull the tranny and drop the spin tube down to clear the brake shoes from the housing and look for something out of place or broken.

This is a rather simple washer to take apart, the trick is to know what's wrong when you take it apart. You might try www.applianceaid.com for info.
