A model number may help others help you.
Model Number Locator I am assuming you are talking about a solenoid. Unplug it and measure it for resistance. If it is open it is toast. I am not sure whet the resistance should be. Remove it and check that it works OK mechanically.

If your mode sifter has failed the spin basked will rotate back and forth during the wash cycle as apposed to just the agitator moving. You will also get the four flash error code on the motor. To confirm disconnect the sifter from the motor and test ohms across the two wires, you should get about 98 ohms give or take. This page has a section about checking the mode sifter (sifter coil).
