It feels like the inside cylinder is off its holder because it moves freelely. Is there something that may have come off that I can fix myself?

It is difficult to give you much guidance without a model number. If this is a top load Maytag, take off the front cover (either by unscrewing at the bottom or inserting a screwdriver to release clips) and watch the machine while it operates.

This should give you some guidance about what is wrong.

If you want further help, post the model number and a description of what you see with the cover off.

Good luck.
