Have a 3 y.o. Amana washing machine that motor just hums. Had finished a load and was starting a medium size load for pre-soak. Ten mins later I smell smoke and traced it to the washer - however it was NOT hummiing at the time. Let it cool and when I tried to do the soak cycle motor was humming loudly. Took motor out of washer to isolate from transmission but motor still hums and will notr spin. Motor is NOT frozen as it will turn by hand. It doesn't free spin but I can turn it without resistance. Any ideas or do you think the motor my be shorted. Thanks

If your motor will not spin under power it will likely need to be replaced.

Turn the drive pulley in each direction. If it turns freely, and from what you have posted there seem no reason why it should not, then the problem is almost certainly in your motor.

Thanks for the advice and help. Replaced the motor earlier todfay and works like a champ. Amazingly this is the very first washing machine moter I've ever had fail (not saying they do not). However, the only thing that is aggravating is the fact that the machine was placed in service on June 15, 2006. Pretty sad to think a motor is good for only three years. . . . Just what is that MAYTAG guy doing? ? Plotting his pay. . LOL

Well, glad you got it fixed. Maytag was great when Jesse White and Gordon Jump were the Maytage repairmen, but since then it has all gone down hill.
