I have disassembled my washer drive components to replace the direct drive coupler. It had deteriorated during a wash cycle and the plastic tabs were sheared off of the two sides and the rubber bushing was deteriorated. I ordered a new coupler and am waiting for delivery.

I decided to reassemble the transmission and agitator after cleaning. I have the transmission bolted in and everything appears correct. The agitator and front casing are now back together. The agitator base will not turn and it appears that the drive shaft/spindle into the agitator is stuck. Is this supoed to turn when thre machine is off? If not, is this a brake problem or a clutch problem? The clutch seems to be turning just fine. The washer tub spin by hand when the agitator is off.

I can turn the drive at the bottom of the transmission where the coupler attaches by hand. Should I wait until I get the coupler back on to see if the machine is operating normally?

Thanks, Don

If your simply reaching in the basket and trying to turn the bottom of the agitator by hand you may not be able too and I would not worry about not being able to turn it by hand.

Yes, I would. Chances are the coupler is the only problem. It is a very common repair on this type of washer and couplers just wear out over time.

btw: to check the gear box i would remove the gear box from the washer and then turn the coupler by hand one direction to see if the shaft agitates and then turn the coupler by hand the other direction to see if the clutch spins, but I would not worry about any of that at this point.

I think once you replace the coupler with the new one you will have it fixed.

Let us know how it turns out.

The coupler arrived and was a snap to install. The machine runs like new! Thank you for your help.
