My parents Whirpool washer's (probably over 25 years old) clothes mover, Has stopped spinning. The agitator is still working. Please advise if I need to replace the entire thing or just purchase the clothes mover. Also advise if i can repair this myself.

Thanks,

Deb

Well, here's a page that will take you through some trouble shooting. Most likely is a bad lid switch or you need a new clutch, but with a machine that old the other things come into play. You can do these repairs.

http://www.applianceaid.com/direct-nospin.html

But come on, a 25 year old machine? Don't you think you want to get your parents a new one, I mean you and your siblings, if any, can kick in and make it a nice present. Don't they deserve it?

(I am speaking as a parent myself)

Good luck, let us know if you need some more guidance

sidfink43, thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll look into that. My parents are not with me anymore and the washer was moved into my house upon my Mom's passing in 2003. Just thought it would be something simple to replace. I also have her stand-up freezer, packer with food, that she purchased in 1978. The year I graduated from senior high school. Thanks, Deb!

Ok, I see I misunderstood when you said your parent's washer, so go ahead and see if you can fix it. If you cannot, you at least know the machine served your family well, and if it's time has come, it has at least had a long and useful life.

Good luck.

I'm going to try and take the cap off (in the link you'd sent), to see if anything has loosened, sometime this week. Thanks for your info, it really helped a lot. Deb

I have old Whirlpool washer (#LA7680XTN0)in the reg wash when agitating it works ok unless it has alot of clothes in it. (will wash 4 pairs of jeans not any more)
it starts making noise and doesn't agitate right.
I was told gearbox is bad. I had it apart and didn't see anything worn or broke. What inside the gearbox or anything else can be possibly wrong?????
