Remove the front panel and look for snubber white shavings. If so, you have a worn snubber. Go to www.applianceaid.com for info on this. You will NOT need to remove the tranny pulley for this and you can use thick washers to stretch the springs. On the Performa, the brake housing screws are long enough to allow removing the tension on the brake spring. If not, you will have to buy a few 6-32 screws, 11/2 inch long to facilitate this.

I am not sure what you are referring to "on the PERFORMA" - If that is a brand of washer - them mine is PAV3360AWW. Yes, I do have some what I guess are shavings - they are real fine powdery looking, like powder soap.
Are you suggesting that I put more tension on the SPRINGS?
Many thanks

From all indications - I will need to also order a TOOL - What does the tool do and can it be done without it?

NO,NO,NO, they allways say you need the special, expensive brake release tool, but it is not needed. Usually the brake housing screws are long enough to back off the housing without any problems. If the scews are too short, just replace with 11/2 inch long 8-32 screws. Just make sure you loosten the screws evenly, you should have no problems. Also, dump some corn starch on the new snubber to keep the wear down.

Thanks for saving me a bunch on a throw away tool
Is there a diagram or anything on how to take it apart on the internet?
If not, do you have a suggestion? I can see where the snubber goes but do I have to take the tub out and bring the whole unit out and take it apart?
Many thanks for your help.
Mel

Go to www.applianceaid.com for info on this Performa. You can use thick washers to spread the springs. You will need to pull the entire tub and tranny out as an assembly. To be smart, you can pry it up and tilt out from the front, set it upside down on wood blocks, saves on the back!! And as I said before, DO NOT remove the tranny pulley, not necessary!! If you crunch into Google "replacing Maytag Performa snubber with pictures" you should get a bunch of sites, maybe the article I wrote on this site!!
