We just bought a new timer for my 27 yr. old washer thinking that was the problem. My husband installed it and it's not the problem. It's doing the same thing the original timer was doing and that is....it will fill up with water and then stop. It won't go through the agitation cycle. I have to turn the timer dial all the way around to rinse and then it will spin and dump out the dirty water. Then I have to turn the dial all the way around to rinse and it will fill with water and then spin and dump it out. Then I have to turn the dial again all the way back around to spin and it will spin and then click on down to stop.
Can you tell me what the problem is and what part I'd need to fix it?
Thanks a lot.

Since it will spin this suggests the motor and wiring is ok, but since it will not agitate I think the problem may be the transmission. See if the motor and belt are turning when it is supposed to be agitating, if so, the transmission is likely the issue.

Given the age of the machine I think you need to congratulate yourselves on getting so much use out of it, far more than almost anyone and to celebrate go ahead and treat yourselves to a new model.

Thank you for your response. You said the same exact thing that our local repairman said. I just went out and bought a new washer.
Happy Thanksgiving!
