Washing machine will start but will than stop part way through wash cycle. At that point, none of the cycles work. However, repeated pushing cycle selector off and pulling back on, coupled with trying various cycle positions eventually results in a restart on whatever cycle happens to be selected. I just replaced the timer unit and was able to do about five loads without incident. However, the problem has returned. Given that the timer is most likely not the problem, I'm thinking that maybe there is a relay or something else electrical that isn't functioning correctly. How to troubleshoot? Any other ideas or suggestions?

I think you are correct in that you do have an electrical problem. It is possible there is a break in the wiring between the timer and the motor switch, and you should check each wire for continuity with a meter. Jiggle the wires as you do it.

Unfortunately, finding something like this is very difficult, particularly in your case where your problem is on again/off again.

Another possibility is in your motor switch. (sort of a relay like you were thinking) It is a mediumly expensive part if you want to try it as a fixbut unfortunately I cannot be certain that it will do the job.

Thank you for your response. My wife is thinking 'new washer' so I'll get to checking the wiring right away. I don't know if she'll be patient enough for a new motor switch. Hopefully I'll find something in the wiring.

Good luck, that "wife wants a new washer" is a horror we have all been through.

If you go that route I recommend the basic, no frills top loading machine. It will cost less, do just as well as a fancy washer and be less likely to need repairs.
