With the front panel off I can see a substantial amount of oil (dry) that has splattered on the inside of the cabinet. It seems to be coming from the point where the transmission shaft housing goes into the bottom of the tub.
What parts and tools do I need to fix the leak and what kind of oil do I need to refill the transmission?

Most likely the tub seal is leaking. When this happens (dirty/oily) water will leak down onto the transmission and then when it spins it slings this water everywhere leaving brown spots all over the inside cabinet. To confirm this is the problem, watch the washer during fill and wash and see if water leaks from the center of the tub (where the transmission meets the tub). If so you will need to replace the tub seal. This page will help Maytag Tub Seal Replacement

You will most likely not have to replace the oil in the transmission typically when oil leaks out of the transmission it will leak under the bottom where the belts are. I believe this will be a water leak.
