I have a roper RAS8333PQ0 washing machine and it seems like when it starts spinning, it will randomly spin for literally a second...stop....then spin a sec....stop...and eventually it will start and stay spinning to the end. If during any of the times it is 'stopped' you grab the knob and wiggle it, it will start again.

Is this a bad timer? Seems to work well other than that.

It does seem like the timer, but before you replace it open up the consold and check the contacts and clean them with a good electrical contact cleaner. That might fix it.
