The most common thing that will cause these models to be noisy during wash is the mode shifter. When the mode shifter is not working the entire tub will rotate back and forth during wash rather than just the agitator rotating back and forth. This will cause the washer to have an unusual noise during wash. This page will explain more GE Washer Repair Guide

It is normal for the tub to be loose.

Default more loud noises

the noise is the loudest while washing not spinning. it sounds like grinding metal. like the tub is rubbing the outter shell. I need to figure out how to remove the front or top so i can watch it during a cycle.

thanks for all your help,

tiffany

The problem I was referring to will occur during agitation. This page will describe how to remove the front and top. Note that the washer shown is and older model but disassembly is the same. Watch the washer during agitation and see if the entire tub turns rather than just the agitator. If so the mode shifter I mentioned above is bad. GE Washer Disassembly Guide

Default GE WJRR4170 not washing correctly

My problem sounds like this too. I can watch my machine during agitation but my whole basket turns back and forth with the agitator just kind of following along. My agitator is 2 parts but they don't seem to move independently of each other either. I thought the agitator was supposed to turn and push the clothes downward in the water. I was suspecting the mode shifter and did a continuity test on the motor's plug that leads to the mode shifter. It failed so does that point to a bad shifter?

Yes, that means that the shifter coil is bad. If you want to repair it the GE washer disassembly link above will help. Note that the washer used on that page is an older model but the disassembly is basically the same.

Default washer problems

I bought my washer from Sams Club over a year ago.
I went back to Sams Club and told them what was happening the lady told me if she could find the washer on my acct she could print up the receipt and i could bring the washer in and they would exchange it. Well She found the copy and i took my 1 1/2 year old washer back and they exchanged it plus gave me $2 back because the washer i bought had went down in price over time.

Default Noisy GE Washer

I followed the test procedure on the previous post and found that my GE washer is not the same. Model # WBSR3140D5WW
I took the front off and observed the basket turning back and forth at the same time the agitator is doing its agitating. The motor does not have the same wire configuration.

About 6 weeks ago I replaced the tub seal using the directions given - thank you.

Your washer is a T model, which just means it has a transmission. Are you sure the tub is spinning back and forth?

I have never seen one with a transmission do this and I thought it would be impossible.

If the brakes are bad the tub will turn in one direction about the same speed as the agitator. If this is the case the transmission will have to be replaced. If the tub seal was bad water was leaking on the transmission, which could have caused it to fail.
