Top Load Center piece that spins back & forth
Model Number: pav2300aww Brand: Maytag Age: 5 - 10 years
I don't know what the piece is called but it's not spinning back and forth my wife has to keep the lid open and put a stick in center of spindal and yank on it while it is spinning

I'm assuming the "center piece" you were talking about is the agitator which consists of two parts: the agitator base (#14 on th diagram) and the auger (#1).
You have to remove the agitator and check the transmission shaft splines and the splines inside the agitator. Post the results. Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for MAYTAG PAV2300AWW | AppliancePartsPros.com Gene.
