My wash machine failed to spin when I used it last night. I smelled what I thought was an electrical smell. I was told by a GE repair man that the trasmission was going out when he was here to repair my fridge about a month ago (I had asked him about the noise it was making during the spin cycle). I assumed that was the problem, but when my fiance checked out the washer today, it seemed to spin just fine. Any suggestions what would cause it not to spin, but be ok the next day? I am going to replace the transmission, but don't want to do that and put it all back together, and still have a problem. Is there anything else I can or should check?

If it had been noisy in spin it’s a good chance the tub seal has been leaking. If the tub seal leaked enough to get the belt wet it may have caused the belt to slip rather than turn the washer. Once the belt started slipping you would smell a burring rubber type smell. Then over night the belt dried off and would spin normally. Note that I am just guessing and my theory hinges on the fact that the washer was leaking which you didn’t mention. Also note that sometimes the tub seal will leak such a little amount of water you may not notice it. Also the tub seal comes with the transmission so if I am right the transmission job will fix your problem. Clothes Washer Repair Guide

Grease on the belt can do the same thing but sitting overnight wouldn't have an effect on it I wouldn’t think.

I replaced the transmission and installed a new tub seal. The washer leaked. I thought maybe the tub seal was defective and tried another new seal. It still leaks. The seal will not stay in place and keeps lifting up towards the spit ring causing it to leak. I tried tapping it in place, but that did not help. What else can I do?

I have seen this a few times where it seemed like the seal seat has somehow gotten to big for the seal. The first time I saw this I was like you I put another seal in and it done the same thing. I had to end up replacing the tub. Note that I have replaced 100s of transmissions and only seen this 3-4 times but each time I had to replace the tub. If you still have your owner’s manual look to see if the tub had a 10-year warranty. I believe some of them did. Obviously you already done this but for anybody else this page has steps-by-step instructions on GE Washer Disassembly Guide
