I've got a GE top loader that is between 10-11 years old. It stopped at the spin cycle today...makes what I can at best describe a humming/gurgling noise.

Upon further inspection, I removed the front panel. The pump on the bottom right is running. While trying to agitate or spin, the belt (in place and tight) does not turn. The only way the belt or motor would turn is if I rotated the agitator or drum by hand. With the belt removed, I can turn the large pulley in either direction and it's not in a bind. One direction turns the agitator; one turns the drum.

I tested the motor by removing the belt, and the motor is spinning as it should.

Does this point to the transmission or something else (cheaper, perhaps :) ) If it's the transmission, it's probably just time to move on. Any help is appreciated!

If you can turn the pulley on the transmission freely (with no drag) both ways by hand I would rule out the transmission. The clutch on the motor may be loose or slipping too much. Also the motor may be bad causing it not to start under a load although it will start by itself. Clothes Washer Repair Guide

Define freely with no drag please...

It spins very freely one way, and the other way it spins, encounters resistance, spins.

I will have to look into the clutch tomorrow. Thanks! Tyson

It is certainly easier in one direction. It seemed to have a resistance every half turn or so in the other.

Your washer won’t spin, is the resistance you feel in the spin direction or wash direction?

In the agitate direction, it spins very very easily. The agitator is moving in both directions as it should.

In the spin direction, I encounter resistance. It certainly isn't impossible to spin, just more difficult. But the bucket is spinning.

Going through its cycle, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Can the clutch be suspect? It has friction material on both surfaces.

Upon even further inspection, the clutch clip is missing. When the motor turns on, the clutch slips down the motor shaft and is not engaging the T slot at the top.

Must find clutch clip before I proceed....

That’s most likely your problem. You may have to replace the whole clutch to fix your problem if because normally the clip doesn’t just fall off (although I have seen it) the clutch is usually broken.

The two tabs that fit into the groove on the motor shaft had spread out. I squeezed them together with pliers and got the clip back on and in place.

It's probably spring steel and is fatigued so I need to buy that part. Fortunately it's very cheap!

Hopefully this will keep it going a while longer. It ran through its spin and agitate cycle.

Is the agitator supposed to move in pulses all in the same direction?
