My washer has a regular and a perm press setting.
If I wash in perm press, it will agitate for a short time - 2 minutes and then stop. I hear the dial clicking around. When it comes time to spin, it does not spin out completely, only about half way.
If I wash on regular, it will not agitate at all, but it will spin most of the water out.
In order to wash, I have to wash on perm press and then use the spin cycle on regular to finish. Since it didn't agitate well, the clothes aren't clean, so it takes at least two full cycles.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you have a bad timer. If your timer has a metal skirt around it, unplug the machine and remofe the skirt. Look for burnt or broken contacts.
