I have a problem with my Maytag washer just stop after the agitate cycle. The timer keeps going but the cycle has stopped so that when the timer says the washer is finished running the washer is still full of water. After waiting about 30 minutes the washer will run the load to completion. I also notice a smell like its overheating. Is there an overheat shutoff or could it be the timer?

During the wash period, the motor is overheating due to bad timer contacts, or a motor going bad, maybe bad bearings in it. If the timer is a metal one, remove the cover and check for burnt contacts.

Thanks for your replay, Richappy. I did check the timer contacts and they look ok. I assume the smell is from the motor bearings. It sounds like I will have to replace the motor.
