My Amana top load washer died last night, I am looking for suggestions on what to check first. The machine fills fine but doesn't aggitate, and does make a sound like it is trying to move. Then the motor stops. After a minute or so it trys to move the aggitator again and then stops, cycle repeats. I also notice a smell coming from it. I took the bottom pnl off and watch the motor cycle. I see that the motor starts for the aggitation cycle but the belt is just slipping on the trans, but no movement of the trans. Moving the dial to spin it will spin and drain. What should be checking first, drive bell or trans?
Thanks for any help.

Sounds very much like your transmission is toast, and given the cost and difficulty of the repair I suggest you strongly consider a replacement.
