this is what happened to my 98 GE Hotpoint. It turned out to be the switch on the motor. There is a switch on the motor that changes the direction of the motor. In one direction it spins the transmission, in the other direction it agitates. Unfortunately for me the switch only came with a new motor and that was $279. Many models offer the switch independent of the motor though and would cost around 40-60$. To check the transmission, put the switch in the cycle you wish to check (agitate for you) and turn the motor and belt in the opposite direction that it spins in the spin cycle. Have someone watch the inside for slight movements of the agitator. If it moves, its not the transmission. Use the model and serial number to locate a new directional switch on the motor.
