I have a GE Profile Washer. It was purchased in 1997 but has not been used much because of water problems. It has sat unused for almost ten years so is still virtually almost brand new. When we fixed our water problem (bad well) I wanted to start using my washing machine again. When I went to fill it the water would not shut off. I had to turn it off manually. What part and number (if you have it) do I need for this? Also, after it filled I went to run it to clean it out and it would not agitate. It filled and drained but would not do anything else. What part and the number do I need for this? My husband is out of work like many Americans are and we are trying to save money by fixing it instead of purchasing a new washer. Which we can't afford. The laundry mat is getting expensive also. Can anyone help me with this problem???

From what you have described I am afraid your washer is probably unusable, and if it could be repaired it would probably take major work.

When you let a washing machine sit that long, particularly if it has been used (even briefly), all sorts of bad things happen. Water does not entirely drain from a machine when it finishes its cycles, and it sounds like you have left some rather corrosive well water in the machine for 10 years.

The biggest potential problem is that the seals weakened, and water seeped into the working parts of the machine. To determine how bad this could be you really need to take the machine apart, and even then you might not be able to tell what was wrong.

The fact that the machine will not shut off water coming in is a good example of this problem. This could be from several sources, but the most likely case is that the solenoid valves which open and close electrically are corroded and inoperative. If this were your only problem, replacing them is an easy fix, but fixing this problem would still leave you with an inoperative machine.

I would recommend a good used top loading Whirlpool or Kenmore. In our area they can be had for $125 to $150 and are basic machines that can be easily repaired if they break.
