I have a direct drive Whirlpool washer Model GSW9650LW0 I followed the video and determined I have a broken coupler. It broke right down the middle.

THe problem I was having was the agitator would not spin. The motor would just hummm. However the washer filled and emptied fine.

I am ready to order a replacment coupler but am concerned that I may have other problems with the washer.

Is there anyway I can test the transmission, engine and brakes while I have the washer exposed?

I would prefer to order all the parts I need in one order. So I would prefer to diagnose all my problems to the extent possible.

With a broken coupling the machine will fill and drain, because the shaft of the motor drives the pump directly.

Replace the coupling and you should be fine.

You were right, I received my coupler from appliance part yesterday (I bought a spare just in case). I was back up and running in 20 minutes.

I do have another question. I am not sure if this problem existed before but I noticed that after spinning and draining the water, the washer makes a fairly noisy clang noise when its about to stop spinning.

Is this normal?

I know this is an old thread, but I had the same noisy stop problem with my direct drive washer for several weeks until the coupler broke. I will be replacing the coupler but did you get any indication of what caused the noise at the end of the spin cycle? Mine was making a rapid clunking noise as the tub span down.

You might have dragging brake shoes. Pull the pump aqnd motor and turn the tranny coupler clockwise till the clutch housing starts to turn, if hard to turn, you have bad brake shoes.
