Washer not draining properly

For the last couple weeks the washer sounds like a small jet plane taking off every time it is in the spin cycle. Today, after the cycle was complete, I went to remove the clothes and they are wet. It appears the water drained out but the tub did not spin. I put the washer back on spin and restarted it. The tub is not spinning; however, when I spin the tub a little it begins to spin but sounds lie it is about to launch itself right out of the machine. The washer is level, the tub is not spinning out of balance. Is this going to be something simple to fix for a non-handyman or should I just take suck it up and buy a new one?

It is posible it is tub bearing which is not a very easy repair, but the noise suggests a transmission problem and either way I think a replacement is the better decision, particularly since Maytag will not provide access to their service manuals any more.

If you decide to go ahead get a repair manual, even if it means purchasing one for a small price.

We lifted the washer to move it out of the laundry room, to get a closer look, and the entire motor/transmission, whatever it's called, fell out the bottom. I am enjoying my new washer as we speak :0)
