Hi Windygail
Can you provide some more information, specifically
1. Did this stop immediately or have you had an on-going problem that has gotten worse?
2. Does the Timer knob move easily, and does anything happen (agitate, drain, spin) if you move it mannually?
3. If you move it to spin, will it drain but not spin?
4. Does the machine operate on any wash cycle?
5. Do you know how to open up the cabinet on this machine.
This info should get us a better idea of the probable causes

This is not an ongoing problem. The knob turns freely but does not operate on any cycle. Will not drain and does not spin. Will not spin manually. Not sure on how to take panel off.

Based on what you have said the most likely problem (and least expensive!) is an open lid switch. This is the safety switch that stops the washer action when you lift the lid. If the switch is not closing when the lid is closed you will get the symptoms you described. First put the machine on the spin setting and press down on the lid, and jiggle it, to see if the machine starts. If not, and
if you decide you wish to diagnose and fix this problem yourself you should
1. Look up replacing the lid switch on this site and others. Be sure and have the machine un-plugged when you work on it.
2. When you get to the lid switch ,by-pass it with a jumper wire (with the power off).
3. Plug the machine in, put the timer on spin and start the machine.
If the machine spins, turn it off immediately and replace the lid switch with the parts from this site. If the machine does not work, post the results and let's see if it might be something else, like the timer.
Good luck.

I tried starting the machine by using a screwdriver to push the button to activate. The machine hummed like it wanted to start but would not spin.

Ok, this helps.
You are still going to have to check the lid switch, which is less likely with your latest post. You are also going to have to take off the front of the cabinet and visually look at the pulley and belt. A broken belt and/or damaged pulley is a real possibility.
Search this site and others to determine how to remove the front of your washer.
Good luck.
