Sudden leakage during the "fill" cycle apperars to be coming from drive shaft-to-drum interface. Is this likely the bearing or could it be a gasket/washer? Any alternate likely causes. Reccomendations?

It sounds like a center seal failure, and given the age of the machine and the possibility water has gotten into the transmission I think a new machine is appropriate.
