My Whirlpool washer will only agitate for small loads. Large load of towels, for example, it won't agitate (or spin). Drains without issue. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Rick,

For the agitation issye, remove the agitator and check the splines on the inside of the agitator bottom

Part number: AP2906554

and the transmission output shaft, the splines could be worn down and slipping on the shaft, with a large or heavy load, otherwise you'll need a new transmission/gearcase.

As for the poor spin issue, you most likely have a slipping clutch assembly
