maytag washer has developed a severe grinding noise on the spin cycle is it something that can be repaired or is it finished

Most likely the problem with your washer is a bad pump bearing.
Lift the washer up from the front, remove the belt and rotate the pump pulley manually. If you feel any tension, replace the pump.
