I just replaced the water pump on my Maytag two days ago because the bearing in the water pump pulley went bad, and that caused my washer to jam and smell like something burning. The water pump is fairly easy to replace.

If you see a copper color ring (or collar) between the water pump pulley and bottom of water pump, you know the bearing has gone bad. You can view this short video to see a picture of what I mean...http://washer-dryer-repair-vide...ining/Pump-replacing.wmv.
