Maytag won't agitate, but spins

My Maytag Atlantis won't agitate. It just make a horrible grinding noise during the wash cycle and then advances to spin and rinse. No agitating during the rinse cycle either.

Easy fix?

Probably a bad transmission, not an easy fix. Unfortunately the fix is to replace it.

Sorry not to have better news.

you mean replace the washing machine - yes?
It's ok, we want one of those front loading ones anyway, but I don't want to get into fixing this one if it's the transmission. We got the machine for free.
