Model Number: WFW8410SW00 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years
My Whirlpool Duet Sport has been throwing F21 and F33 codes intermittently. A technician who seemed kind of new cleaned out the pump, 'cleared the codes', and said that the pump needs to be replaced for $290. I asked him how long it would take (30 minutes) and he said the pump was $140. On this website, it is only $73. Between the markup on the pump and a $300/hr labor rate, I think it would be worth to try just doing it myself. Any advise, instructions, or thoughts?

Here you go, instructions from the service manual for your washer, you'll be up and running in no time. 1. Unplug washer or disconnect power. 2. Turn off the water supply to the washer. 3. Remove the lower front access panel. (Remove the three hex-head screws from the bottom of lower front access panel, then lower the panel, and remove it.) 4. Using a shallow pan to catch the water, unscrew the filter from the drain pump, and drain the water from the pump. 5. Loosen the clamp and remove the pump to tub hose from the drain pump. 6. Loosen the clamp and remove the pump to tub drain hose from the drain pump. REASSEMBLY NOTE: When you reconnect the hoses, align their tab(s) with the marks on the drain pump. 7. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, lift the rubber pad, and slide the pump to the left and unhook the bottom tab, then lift the pump out of the chassis floor slots. 8. Lift the wire cover on the drain pump, and disconnect the wire connector from the terminals. 9. Remove the wires from the clip, and remove the drain pump from the washer. REASSEMBLY NOTE: When you reinstall the drain pump, make sure that you completely reseat the rubber pad in its chassis floor slot. Good Luck,

Once you replace the pump, you'll be fine. there is no need to clear the codes. And the F21 code indicates the problem is in the drain pump system, you won't need a CCU, as long as you unplug the power cord before you start.

Thanks, great advice. My pump will show up Tuesday. I took the current one out this weekend and it went well (I never unplugged it, but it didn't seem to be an issue). I found the technician special instructions taped inside the sheet metal panel, and figure out how to run the Diagnostics - so easy, i can't believe I paid a technician $70 to tell me what i could have figured out myself.. that goodness I didn't pay him the $300 to change the pump! When I ran the diagnostic the second time i witnessed the pump motor 'siezing'.. I tapped it with my wrench and bam, it started up. I taught my wife the workaround so that we can do laundry until i replace the pump on Tuesday.
I am pretty happy with this whole experience and i am really glad i was able to fix it myself with your help. The one thing in the instructions that was off was when you pull up the rubber plug that holds the pump in place, you slide it to the right, not toward the left. |

Great, Remember, the power cord next timke, the idea being, you don't get hurt/shocked when you're reaching around inside the washer, and you don't short out any other components. Good Job,

Thanks alot for these great instructions, I purchased the new pump locally and saved a bunch of $$ on a service call by installing myself, quick and easy took me about 30 minutes from start to finish
Thanks for the note regarding making sure to check the hoses and clamps back, there was a little leak at first but then I adjusted the clamps and the leak was taken care of. |
