I believe the clothes washed ok and then the machine did not spin.
It made a not so loud noise will on spin like a growling noise. Can you tell me the main thing to check and possibly the next thing or 2 in case the first doesn't fix it. IS it worth trying to fix at this age? Probably depends on cost of parts and difficulty to repair.

If its time to get a new washer, any opinions based on your expertise in repair. Would you recommend a brand or model, for reliability, ease of repair etc.??

The first thing I would check is the motor drive coupling (#13 on the diagram). The complete instructions are attached.
