My washer is two years old and used for only 1-2 loads of sheets and towels each week. Last weekend the first load washed fine, However, on the second load the washer started as usual, filled with water, but made a loud banging sound when the wash cycle began and the drum was not turning. Any suggestions?

Take off the back and the top and check to see if one of the support strust is broken.

Took the back off and found a shredded belt. I'll try replacing it to see if that fixes it.

Ok, good, but take a close look at things as the belts usually don't shred themselves unless there is something else wrong.
Hopefully you just had a bad belt and that was all.

Looked things over as best I could and everything seemed OK. Replaced the belt and used the washer for several loads without problem.
Thanks for your help...this turned out to be a much better solution than the $300 quote for a service call I had gotten before finding your site.

Good, keep an eye on the new belt for a while, just check it every couple of weeks.
Thanks for the update, good luck going forward.
