My direct drive whirlpool washer drum went off balance and violently beat against the cabinet yesterday. I have the repair manual, but it doesn't help me narrow down what's broken, just how to replace parts. It's not the suspension springs or suspension bracket like I was hoping (figured that would be a quick and easy fix), so I have to remove the tub which means I have to remove the rear panel. But, once I do that, how will I tell what needs to be replaced? Will it be obvious that it's the pads or the gearcase or something else? And will I need to remove the agitator first to get the tub off? And while it's all apart, are there other things I should go ahead and replace. This is a 15yr old machine that I'd like to last another 15 years.

Thanks,
Deana in Georgia

I looked closer and found the counterweight spring was not attached to the base! The base had rusted through, which explains why the drum had slowly been tilting over the last few years!!

Now off to order a base, take it all apart, and put it back together again. :)

Thanks!

Hi D,
I am having the same problem. Did it take a long time to replace the part? Also was it expensive? Do you wish that you had just bought a new washer? When I took my clothes out yesterday, I felt electricity was running through the clothes. Grace
