Intermittent Spin... Clicking Sound & Smells

This problem started about 4 months ago. It would happen about every 5 loads. Then it became more and more common until now it happens most every wash.
The washer will fill and agitate. When it gets to the spin cycle, the washer will not spin and will make a clicking or buzzing noise. The noise is coming from behind the dials. (I believe this is the timer unit). Initially, I would turn the washer off, wait a few minutes, and try again and the washer would spin fine. Tonight it took about 2 hours of trying, waiting, and retrying for it to finally spin. When the spin cycle isn't working, if I don't stop the washer within a minute or so, I can start to smell a slight burning smell. When it won't spin, if I turn it to agitate, it will agitate. If I turn the dial to the end of the cycle, it will drain, but still won't spin.
My initial research makes me think it may be the timer unit or the clutch. I really am not sure though and was looking for some advice.
Thank you so much for your help!
