My GE washer overflows, I can stop the water by turning off the maching with the control knob. After the washer is full I cannot get the machine to agitate by advancing the control knob

More often than not the pressure tube being clogged causes this. Take the front off the washer and look on the left hand side and you should see a small tube attached to the bottom of the tub. Take that tube loose and see if it is clogged as well as the nipple the tube fits onto. If that tube isn’t clogged replace the water level control.
