Model Number: HTGHW9400 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years
This washer has been very dependable. Recently I noted that one of the three plastic baffles inside of the washer drum broke off. I ordered a replacement part but noted that it requires that I access the back of the drum to secure the baffle with the supplied screw.
How would I go about accessing this area? Thanks for your input. Ads By Google Related Models |

There is a post from October 5, 2007 by Skysentinel, in which user dland identifies the problem and walks through the steps to fix it. Having just followed those steps this evening, I can tell you that it really is an easy process...took me 20 minutes and no, you don't have to remove the inner drum or anything like that. I think the part cost was something like $30 for the set of three new baffles and the retaining screws that hold them in, something that was not done for a large number of these units and is contributory to why so many baffles are now falling off. Our unit is eight years old and has otherwise been flawless.

In my opinion, this is one of the most poorly engineered washers ever built. We have an early generation (if not the first generation) model and have had problems with this washer almost from the beginning, including having to replace at least 10 baffles. Which aren't cheap. The first problem we had was an electrical connection that constantly came loose, causing an "F5" (I think) error message. Once we figured out that no matter how many times we reconnected it, it was going to come loose, we secured it with electrical tape. It is unacceptable to me that the baffle design is so god-awful. When we re-ordered the last baffle replacements, the woman at the parts supply house told us she orders the replacement kits *all the time*. The last time we ordered, I was determined to find a way to make the baffles stay in place and that's how I found this forum. The washer recently suffered some damage in a flood. Although it has dried out and makes some noise like it is working, and I don't think it works right. Secretly, I'm sort of glad because it gives me an excuse to get rid of this piece of junk. I will not put another penny into repairing this poor excuse for a washer. (BTW, when it works, it does work fine. It's just that I don't trust Whirlpool and the team of alleged professionals who designed a washer with at least two major design flaws.) |
