Recently had to repair upper agitator and worked fine for a while, but now makes awful sound (like bad bearings?) when washing, especially in slower cycle. Friday did not spin all water out of clothes. Today spin ok. What do I need to check first for the awful noise, and can I access through top or do I need to go in from bottom?

You do not go in either from the top or bottom. You take the entire cabinet off. This video will show you how.

then check to see that nothing is caught between the tub and drum, that the pump is ok, that the coupling is ok and then finally check the clutch and the support system and springs.
