Would a worn D.D. coupling cause a banging noise and cause the agitator to jump during the spin cycle? Washer agitates fine and seems to run normally until the spin cycle. Removed case, and inspected the suspension, springs are OK. Dropped the motor, and spun the tranny coupling clockwise, feels smooth, w/ no skipping or grinding. Is tranny probably OK? Can i really be sure without disassembling and inspecting the tranny? Coupling IS worn but still intact, slots in the rubber coupling disk are elongated and needs replaced. Can a bad coupling cause that much noise?

Pull the agitator out and check the drive block nut. If tight, check that the spin tube tabs are in the drive block slots. You can put the washer in spin and watch what happens to the basket.

Checked the drive block, nut is tight. Spin tube is OK. Next I dropped the tranny for closer inspection. Turning the tranny drive coupling clockwise, the agitator shaft also wants to turn to a certain degree then slips, I'm thinking this was causing the banging sound during spin cycle. Shaft has a loose feel to it, not sure if this is normal, but I'm sure the tranny is worn being that the washer has been cleaning 1-2 loads daily for the past 12 years. Everything else, motor, timer, clutch, brake, drum, basket seems in good condition. If replacing the tranny, drive coupling, pump and agitator dogs gives another 5- 10 years to the washer seems like money well spent to me. Although I know from experience that older electrical components could fail at any time. Any thoughts?

Put the tranny back in and turn the coupler clockwise till the tranny shifts to spin. If hard to turn you have dragging brake shoes, or something stuck in the tub.
