it will occasionally spin out , but most often it doesn't centrifuge the water out like it should.

If we catch it , lift the lid and close it again the machine will 'catch' and start to spin. After reading some of the posts here - I suspect a clutch assembly...
Any input on what the issue is??
I have ruled out a lid switch , as the motor always runs. I have NOT disassembled the machine , but figured that was the most likely culprit .
(BTW the last time Wife used it some water leaked - but I think it was from an unbalance overfill)

Hi Robert

Due to your washer has a neutral drain transmission, it should stop for a few seconds during the drain to engage the spin. If it does not stop automatically, then the problem is a bad timer which has to be replaced.

It does INDEED stop for a few seconds in between the drain & 'spin'- but when the unit 'engages' (a clack is heard) sometimes the drum will spin and usually it doesn't....

Does the motor run when the drum does not spin?
If it does, then most likely the problem is a worn out driveblock.
Remove the agitator and the spanner nut. Visually inspect the drive block. If it has to be replaced you will have to remove the cabinet and the inner tub.

In ordfer to remove the spanner nut you will need a special spanner wrench.

GOTCHA!
YES the motor does run while the tub doesn't usually spin , but it's not consistent - that is why I questioned the clutch assembly.

I guess I'll check that out before I order some parts!!

I used a blunt punch & hammer to pull the spanner nut.....and didn't even chew up the nut ~ LOL

The two tabs on top of the spin tube are flush with the top to the drive block.
The drive block has two notches that those tabs are 'locked' into. I didn't pull the tub B/C the drive block and spin tube are flush and the tabs + block look good , am I making the right choice here??
I'm still guessing the clutch is bad , what do you think Gene??

Ir there is nothing wrong with the drive block then, most likely the problem is a bad gears in the transmission (aka gear case) and it has to be replaced. If it spins some time there is nothing wrong with the clutch.

NOT exactly the answer I was looking for....

I just figured that there was a good likelihood that the delrin (white plastic) dog in the clutch was possibly worn and not 'engaging' all of the time ( I don't know how the clutch actually works) - and $30 worth of parts sounds better that $145 !!!!

40% of the original purchase price is a bite.
UNLESS Whirlpool would support replacing the tranny UNDER the 5 yr ltd warranty - but I'd BET the won't do it unless I pay a repair person a service call and labor to replace it.

If the transmission was bad - wouldn't I have problems with agitator running as well??
It always washes - you can hear (or see) it .... just the spin cycle seems to be the issue.
