Went to pullthe bolt to remove the agitator and it appears that the inside of the agitator, down to the bolt, is coated in gease type sunstance (possibly a lithium). No grease or stains on clothes that I know of. Any ideas

What is the model number? Most of the older Maytag agitators were held in place by a set screw near the base; usually a Torx T-20.

I got the agitator off. My concern is the thick greasy substance that was on the bolt head and up and down the vertical opening in the agitator itself.

AH! That's usually nothing to be concerned about. Access to this grease is normally well sealed away from your wash water.
