spin but no aggitation

When filled with water the motor kicks on but there is no aggitation. I checked the belt and tried turning the belt by hand. it will turn counterclockwise for spinning just fine but locks up when turning clockwise for aggitation. is the tranny bad or is there something else i can check

I think you are right in that something is hung up in the transmission which is preventing it from agitating.
