I have a GE washer and the agitator doesn't move properly. I have taken off the agitator and checked the coupling and they are both fine. I have noticed that the transmission shaft moves about a quarter turn freely (loose) when I move it with my fingers. This is the problem. Any ideas?

Well it sounds like something is busted inside the transmission itself, and while I cannot say more without a model number, the basic GE washer transmission is not repairable and must be replaced.
