Default Kenmore Washer - wont stop last spin cycle + how long spin cycle suppose to last?
Model Number: 110.23822100   Brand: Kenmore   Age: More than 10 years

History: I ordered a new timer AP3131136 (661649) for my washer because the old one stopped working, it would not automatically turn through the cycles anymore.

The new timer when I first got it worked but a week later when it comes to completing the wash cycles it never stops the last spin cycle, it just spins until you manually shut it off. I manually rotated through the cycles to each OFF section and after ultimate clean and permanent press cycle 1 there is a very narrow OFF section within a range of 1 to 2 clicks before the next cycle would start. Manually rotating the dial to these OFF sections and then pulling the knob out, the washer does not actually turn off it stays in spin mode.

I also noticed the plastic ring with the cycle indicator line, the pointer, and the knob you turn does not line up any more, the knob is half a cycle ahead before it catches and turns the timer.

On the original timer when you pushed the knob in, to stop the machine there was no play you couldn't continue to push in a little bit further but with this new timer you can.

Are these things "Normal" with the new timers, play in the timer when you push in on the knob and also the knob not lining up with the line indicator? Reason I asked is the original timer didn't have these issues.

I called support and they are sending out a new timer but I wondered about these because if the new timer has same characteristics I am not sure if this is a defect or just the way they are made now.

I see you have two posts for this same problem. I just answered the other one. I also see that you have additional information in this post. I would say that the timer that you just installed has a welded contact inside it. So it will need to be replaced. That is why the "off" is not in the right spot and it wants to spin all the time.

You should be fine once you install the new timer. The only things I would check, would be the voltage at the outlet. It should be 115 or more and check the amp draw on the motor in spin. It should be under 10 amps.

(Higher than normal amp draw or low voltage can cause contacts to become welded together.)

Thank you for your reply. When I pulled the timer out of the box I noticed it had grease on it, I suppose a refurbished item?

I only used the permanent press cycle the first few times I did laundry with the new timer, the ultra clean setting is when I noticed it never stopped.

I do not have anyway to check voltages or anything at the outlet or any other places. All I know is nothing has been changed in the circuit from the electric box to the plug in the last 5 years except I replaced fuses in the whole box a year or so ago. The washer is on it's own dedicated circuit too which eliminates other appliances or anything on the same circuit causing issues.

I am guessing it was bad from the warehouse, it didn't feel right to me compared to the original.

There is one OFF setting I tried that when it is set to that and I pull out the knob the washer agitates without any water in it. That same setting with the original timer the machine was OFF.

Its probably just a bad timer. The new one should fix it. Good luck.
