Model Number: WFW8500SR0 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years
Washer (not brand new) was in garage for a couple months (Nov - Jan 16th) while bathroom was renovated. Exposed to sub-freezing temps (and then some) NO ANTIFREEZE was used prior to storage - contractor allegedly allowed it to thaw before testing it out. Water won't drain, shows F-21 error. I removed front panel & checked drain filter, I pulled out a couple coins and made sure all was clear (nothing around the impeller, etc.), reassembled everything and it still won't drain also verified that the drainage hose was clear, not too high & not to low, etc. I noticed "a liquid" inside the actual motor compartment - I assume it's a kind of lubricant. I removed the pump motor and noticed the liquid does drip out of the motor compartment and contains small black particles. Did the freeze 'kill' the pump motor? Should there BE liquid inside? Wondering if simply replacing the PUMP unit (8540024) will solve the problem. Should I also 'worry' about the AIR TRAP (8540180) ?

if you set to drain only do you hear or feel the pump motor, put your hand on top and see if there is an vibration, if there is , remove pump and slide your hand up accordian black hose going to tub , there is plastic ball inside ,see if is clean and smooth and moves freely if so and drain hose is not blocked or kinked then replace pump and hope for best

Yep - the pump motor is definitely active, the impeller is spinning and whole motor portion vibrates. It's not quite right though as it far noisier than it should be/was! There's NO way my hand will fit into the black accordion like tube, it's opening is only about 1.5 inches wide! However, I'm aware of the ball you mentioned, is a back flow preventer, right? It's there and moves freely, although not sure it's 'properly' preventing back flow. If I squeeze the accordion like tube, sort of milking it to manually 'pump' the water out, should the water flow BACK into the tub? (i.e. I can see the water level go up & down as I 'milk' the tube. Water DEFINITELY is flowing to the pump!!! I've had to open the pump trap several time to drain the washer!!! PLENTY of flow to the pump. ;-)

Replacing the pump SOLVED the problem!
Found the part here: Hesco Appliance Parts your HVAC and appliance parts specialists and had it the next day. Sears Service Parts also CLAIMED to have the part in-stock but it auto-magically became back-ordered a day after I ordered it! I canceled my order from them! Cheers, Joe |
