I am reposting for more clarity. The washer fills up with water. Then nothing. No noise at all. The setting knob that slowly turns during the wash cycles , turns . When it gets to the spin cycle , it spins greatly

I assume that the machine does drain before or as it enters the spin fuanction. If you are certain the motor is not turning during the agitation then the timer is likely the problem. This is particularly the case if it agitates in the rinse cycle.
