Default was thumping, now not spinning without help
Model Number: Series 80   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

I have read several posts here regarding my problem, but would rather confirm before assuming my problem is actually the same.

For about a month, the washer would thump loudly while slowing down from the spin cycle--loud enough to shake the entire house, usually louder the second spin than the first.
Then, one day, the washing machine gods smiled and it stopped.
Unfortunately, within a few weeks, I noticed that the spin cycle no longer spun out, especially with a larger load. Empty, it mostly works, but can be completely stopped without any effort.

Am I looking at the brake, clutch or coupler?

Thanks

Steve

Sounds to Me like the DRIVE BLOCK at the top of the BASKET DRIVE, Replace the coupler anyway, and you should be all set!!!

So, any idea about the part number? I maybe missing something, but I don't see anything like that on searpartsdirect under my model number.

Nothing like home repairs to make you feel kind of dumb...

Are you talking about the block basket drive?

ok, thanks. I dug a little deeper on the sear page and found it. Do I have to take the motor out to take out the drum or can I just pull the drum out from the top?

Assuming this is a direct drive Whirlpool washer, you will need to get the special spanner wrench available on this site to take the spin basket oput. Once out, carefully inspect the spin tube tabs, probably worn from all the pounding. If worn, you will need a new spin tube assembly, part # AP3094539
