In spin cycle (and maybe in other cycles as well -- I unplugged the machine when this started and now have it all apart) the machine made a loud banging noise, almost as if it had an uneven load (it didn't) and when I opened the lid and bypassed the switch, the tub was attempting to spin as the loud banging continued. It looked like the tub was "twitching" as it was trying to spin. It's not the coupler -- checked that.
I have the machine down to the outer tub thinking I could get at the clutch from there but I can't seem to remove the large, plastic outer tub. I did unscrew the springs from the tub. The inner tub and agitator are removed.
How do I get at the clutch, assuming I need to?
If it is the clutch or transmission, am I better off just purchasing a new machine?
We're sitting here with a skeleton of a machine and ever growing piles of dirty, stinky clothes (there are six of us here!) and need help fast!
Thanks.

You problem is probably the drive block.

Nat,
Thanks but the drive block looks okay. So does the clutch assembly. However, when I turn the motor using the shaft that extends for the pump, the rods which turn the agitator and tub only turn intermittently. When they don't turn, it sounds like the gears in the trans are not fully engaging. Anyone know if this means the trans is shot? Is it hard and/or not a good idea to take it apart?
Thanks
