Model Number: MAH4000AWW Brand: Maytag Age: 1 - 5 years
I have a Maytag washer, Model MAH4000AWW, Serial # 11280382WD. This washer came with the house we just bought, so I don't know how exactly old it is or its history. All I do know is that when you start a load and select WARM, you get hot water. To actually get warm water, you have to first select WARM, then select COLD, then select WARM again. With this sequence, you actually get warm water. If you start out on COLD then select WARM, you get hot. This is true for both the WARM/COLD wash/rinse selection as well as the WARM/WARM selection. Is this a sticking valve? How is the plumbing arranged on these things, one valve w/ two inlets or two separate valves for hot and cold? Are these hard to change yourself?

These are dual valves, each side (hot and cold) controlled by individual solenoids. When the temperature is selected, the incoming water is monitored and controlled by a thermistor, which in turn is controlled and monitored by an electronic control board. There are ways to diagnose the operation of the components. The tech sheet that accompanies the machine is located within the console and is accessed by removing the back panel (six screws), unless a previous tech took it out. The tech sheet tells you step by step how to diagnose the problem. Take it out and carefully read through it before you use it. The inlet valve is as simple to replace as the fuel injector on your family auto.
