Model Number: LSR8300EQ1 Brand: Whirlpool Age: More than 10 years
I am having trouble with my washer. During the spin cycle it makes a loud knocking sound that gets worse the longer it runs. While watching the spin cycle with the cover off, I have also noticed that the agitator doesn't always spin freely with the clothes. It appears like it is briefly getting snagged on something every so often. Similar to the noise, the frequency of this snagging seems to increase the longer I let the spin cycle run. I am guessing the cause of my problem is the gear box. Am I on the right track and is there anyway to determine for sure if it is the gear box other than to just replace it? Thanks.

Take off the cabinet and operate it by by-passing the lid switch and watch to see if you can determine if there is a problem in the springs or support pieces.
If not check the brakes using the info in the Sticky at the top of this page by Richappy on Direct Drive Brakes.

I also pulled off the motor and pump as suggested in the Direct Drive Brakes Sticky. The coupler pieces all look OK. When I rotate the coupler clockwise the basket seems to rotate OK. The interesting thing is that while I was spinning the basket the agitator moved in one direction and then the other like it was trying to agitate. Is this normal? Thanks. |

I may have celebrated too early. After the using the washing machine for a week it now it started emitting a burnt rubber smell yesterday. The machine still seems to be running fine. I pulled it all apart again last night and didn't see anything that looked bad, so I put it back together and am running it more today to see if the problem either becomes more obvious or goes away. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks.
