I have a top load kenmore(whirlpool) that broke the tranny coupling. I purchased from this site a replacement which had a metal insert. I installed and ran the washer. after a while during agitation I smelled a burn smell like maybe an overload. I inspected and nothing appeared amiss. However I turned both the motor/ tranny and the water pump by hand. The water pump by itself seemed to take more torque to rotate by itself to turn than the tranny/ motor combination. I would guess several pounds. Is this water pump my problem? would a dragging water pump break the coupling on the other end of the motor? thanks Al Haney

You probably have dragging brake shoes causing the motor to overheat, not a safe condition. You can go to my sticky "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes" for info on this. Best to have an amp probe for this repair and the special spanner wrench.
